Angel Deli located within Chapel Market was terrible upon my recent visit. I’m no stranger to this cafe. I have visited Angel Deli a number of times, especially during my college days. Although, I noticed a recent decline in the quality of the food.
I always used to opt-in for the panini’s, sausage rolls and baguette. It was a great quick bite. I revisited for some breakfast. The owner was there at that time. A very talkative, friendly man. Service seemed great.
Angel Deli serving Breakfast Hell
Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day by many. However, this breakfast was by far the worst. So let’s get into the details. We ordered two different breakfast plates from the menu. A mixed grill for £6.95 and a “quick start” for £5.95. Both meals are served with tea or coffee and toast.
Now, I don’t want to be nitpicking but I ordered the “Quick Start” from the menu. It comes with 2 fried eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and MUSHROOMS OR CHIPS. So I asked for chips but when the food was served it came with mushroom. After telling them about the mistake, they did offer to serve chips but stated that it will take an additional 15 minutes of waiting. I politely declined the offer as the breakfast would be cold in the next 15 minutes.
The sausage is sliced in half and laid down flat, to give the illusion of a fuller plate. The overall “Quick Start” was extremely boring. If our order was delivered correctly, I’m sure some hot chips would have helped but instead, the mushrooms were cold and sad.
Mixed Grill with a Fishy Taste
We ordered a mixed grill breakfast plate. It includes 1 egg, a beef burger patty, chicken kebab, turkey bacon, sausage, mushroom and chips or hash browns. I chose hash brown with this as I expected chips to arrive with the ‘Quick Start’.
When my plate arrived, it looked super empty and dry. The beef burger patty was pretty much a cooked frozen, processed patty. I found it to be extremely salty. The sausage was sliced in half, mushrooms were cold and the hash browns were too oily.
While the mixed grill did not contain any fish, the chicken kebab on the skewer had a strong fishy stench coming from it. It didn’t help that the chicken was dry, had an odd bitter taste and an awful fish taste. Total disappointment.
Service & Atmosphere
Angel Deli is a family run restaurant which serves sandwiches, coffees, lattes, tagines, breakfast and lunch. The atmosphere is really dull and the staff look fed up all the time. Service is slow and awkward at times too. The approximate wait time for our meal was between 20 to 25 minutes.
