FatBoyz Diner is small burger joint located in East London, Barking Road, East Ham. It is a rather small joint, however, don’t let the size of this diner fool you. The decor is loud and the food is louder.
We were greeted by the friendly staff and given a menu. I hadn’t eaten anything that day, so FatBoyz was gonna be my first meal and I had quite the appetite. The menu is small and simple (which is a good thing). Making it was easy to choose from.
Order Summary from FatBoyz Diner
Since the menu was nice and small, it made it easy to pick from. I had to try “Fatboy (BMT)” because it had the name of the place. So I needed to know what that was all about. Fatboyz has different, interesting, creative fries. Ranging from pizza fries, cheesy fries, with pepperoni to dirty chips. They even have some delicious looking Mac n Cheese.
For sides, I went for something simple, waffle fries. Potato cut into waffle shapes and fried. I also went for some grilled peri chicken wings and the American single burger.
- American Single Burger £6
- Fatboy (BMT) £12.50
- 6 pieces of Grilled Peri Peri Chicken wings £4
- Waffle Fries £2.50
Waffle Fries and Grilled Chicken Wings
The waffle fries were served hot, crispy and had some sort of seasoned flavour to it. I wasn’t entirely sure what it was but it reminded me a bit of cajun salt. The texture of the waffle fries was crispy, had a good crunch and was fluffy inside.
FatBoyz Diner does grilled chicken and buffalo chicken wings on the starter section of the menu. For the grilled chicken wings you can choose between BBQ or Peri Peri. We went for peri. If you also love peri, then you gotta read about this place, which can be compared to Nando’s.
The American Single Burger
The menu would be small but the burgers are certainly not. With plenty options to add more toppings and patties to your burger, I don’t think you can have a small burger from FatBoyz.
The American Single is a single beef patty burger, American cheese, caramelised onions, lettuce, tomato and mustard mayo. It’s the most basic burger but it packed a punch in your mouth. Instantly from the first bite, I went “Ummmm”, with a smile on my face. It was juicy, succulent, seasoned very well along with the soft and sweet texture of the brioche bun. It really made me feel like a true fat boy.
The Fatboy Burger
The name says it all. This burger is packed with poached egg, deep fried in a breaded crumb, crunchy breaded chicken fillet, turkey rashers, smoked cheese, bacon mayo, lettuce and tomato. Oh and let’s not forget the 8oz beef patty!
The menu says, the Fatboy (BMT), comes with a FatBoyz special sauce, however, I’m sure it was just burger sauce. If it wasn’t, it tasted exactly the same. When it arrived, it was topped with onion rings.
The burger was huge! I had to disassemble it to eat it. I took out the bread chicken fillet. I felt it was too heavy on the breadcrumbs and could have done with being a bit more softer and juicier. Nonetheless, it wasn’t all that bad.
I wasn’t a fan of the deep-fried poached egg, for the simple fact that it was a bit too much and the egg needed salt. So I had put it aside after tasting it.
The beef patty was thick, juicy, succulent and tender. I don’t know whether FatBoyz asks how you want your burgers cooked, but I forgot to say it and they never asked. All the burgers came near to well done.
The Atmosphere and Service
The atmosphere is great, although the place is small. I can visualise it getting crowded with everybody sitting closely together on a full day. The tables are quite close together so it can be hard getting in and out of the seats. The overall service was good, with the waitress who took our order, coming to check if we wanted anything and if everything was fine with our order. There was some great graffiti art on the wall too.
I definitely recommend this burger joint for a quick and cheap bite if you happen to be around the area of East Ham. I will be coming back here again, to taste more of the menu. Also, I must mention, they have a loyalty card. When you collect 3 stamps, you get a free side. For 6 stamps a free burger and 9 stamps you get a free burger and shake. How brilliant is that?
