For all my halal-goers, I’d like to inform you that all the chicken are halal from GBK (hurray). Panko crumbed chicken used for burgers is cooked in 100% rapeseed oil in a fryer SPECIFIED FOR CHICKEN ONLY. However, the grilled chicken is cooked alongside other non-halal meat on the grill, therefore, making it ‘non-halal’ (bummer). I guess we will only know how the halal panko chicken tastes for now.
Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) was founded in 2001. Three guys from New Zeland and a world-renowned chef Peter Gordon set up the first Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Battersea, South London. GBK now has over 80 restaurants across the UK. They boast about using fresh ingredients and creating their burger sauces from scratch, every day, in each GBK kitchen.
The only proper halal option from the menu: Panko Chicken
Since it was the case that we couldn’t order anything else apart from the panko breaded chicken, we decided to order the classic chicken burger (with halal panko chicken of course) and skinny fries. We also ordered the Limited Edition Ninja burger, with zero expectations, along with a side of truffle cheese fries and a choco shake.
The sides of our meal were FREE. If you want to know why continue reading and we will reveal how you can get sides free too.
The limited edition Ninja burger was Japanese inspired. It had panko chicken, katsu curry sauce, salad, Tokyo slaw, miso ketchup and the rather unfamiliar black bun. Yep. Black Bun. It is called a Ninja burger and what better way is there to represent a ninja within a burger?
The Chicken Ninja Burger had a sort of a gingery taste to it, I wasn’t too fond of the burger overall but the Panko crumbed chicken was moist, succulent and crisp! The classic chicken burger had the same Panko crumbled chicken topped with a sesame bun and tasted like you’d expect a chicken burger to taste. Overall I enjoyed the classic burger a lot more than the Ninja burger.
I loved the milkshake. It was nice, thick and chocolatey. Served in a nice large metal cup and tastes exactly how you want a milkshake from a metal cup to taste: thick. I didn’t forget about the free sides. Keep reading.
